Nike Air Force 1 shoes were first released in 1982. The sneaker is named after the
Air Force One plane that carries the US president. The name was given to this Nike shoe model
to make consumers embrace the idea of wearing something regal. Discontinued one year after its' release in 1983,
Nike re-released air forces again in 1986. Since then the Nike Air Force 1 has become one of Nike's best selling
shoes of all-time and without marketing money spent.
Molded by the mind of Nike's Bruce Kilgore, Air Force 1 sneakers were the first shoe to use Nike
Air technology. Stylish and comfortable, Nike AF1s were first majorly accepted by the urban communities across America. Kilgore's design is
considered such a classic that even today, little has changed about the Nike Air Force 1 design. Changes to the
Air Force 1 since it's inception include less stitching and the addition of a modern Nike swoosh (Nike check)
to the back panel. The shape of the Air Force 1 Low, Mid, and High has been retained for over a decade with more
generations latching onto the sneaker.
Since its release, over 1,700 color and style variations of the Nike Air Force 1 have been released.
Sneaker Culture and the fashion savvy have marked the shoe as a must-have, garnering Nike over $800 million per year
off this one sneaker model alone. Much of the income was generated post rap song "Air Force 1s" by St. Louis-born
superstar Nelly. His 2002 chart-topping hit drove masses to their local sneaker store to buy whatever Air Force 1 was in stock. Many stores
across America sold out of every Air Force 1 carried.
In 2007, for the 25th anniversary of the original Air Force 1, Nike created the Air Force XXV, which
got its inspiration from original Air Force 1 invented in 1982. Hip-Hop artists, other entertainers, professional
athletes, and designers were all in attendance at the party for the Air Force XXV sneaker's release.
While Nike reigns supreme in controlling who retails their full Air Force 1 sneaker line, the company has not been
able to control the monstrous sneaker market created by people's infatuation with Nike shoes. Originally stores
wanting to retail Air Force 1 shoes had to get their location reviewed and approved by a Nike representative before
selling Nikes. Before 2008, retail stores were prohibited from selling Air Force Ones on-line.
Everything changed when major footwear store chain Finish Line (click here) was granted rights to sell white / white
highs and lows.
The high demand for Nike Air Force Ones created an open market against Nike's wishes. The popularity of Air Forces
created an on-line market for resellers to grow steadily since 2003. Brandishing high prices for exclusives, profits
have slowed over time, but Nike Air Force Ones such as the Playstation Lows, Stash One Highs, and Busy P Low Supremes
continue to resell at over 10x their original suggested retail.
