Akademiks clothing is a Hip Hop clothing line that created and utilized an alternate
spelling of “academics” for their brand. The popular label was
created by two brothers Donwan and Emmett Harrell in 1999. The brothers focused on a mission to inspire and
lead youth into a fashion revolution. This revolution that the Akademiks clothing brand sought to begin
challenged socirty and authority with a creative energy and loud voice to create a fashion aesthetic.

label was poularized in 2001 by rap artist Fabolous when he wore the Hip Hop clothing line's
velour suit in his album art for “Ghetto Fabolous.” Fabolous also boosted sales for the brand through
mention of Akademiks in the lyrics of his songs. Alongside criticism with the industry that consists of its consumers,
Akademiks clothing received backlash for ads placed on MTA. Akademiks clothing created ads for MTA
buses that read “Read Books, Get Brain.” Akademiks clothing brands were accused and criticized for
conveying a message with a sexual double to the public. Since then Akademiks has created clean
and effective ads to be displayed on MTA buses.
Learning the “akademiks” of fashion was essential to the Harrell brothers upon the creation of
the brand. Akademiks clothing strives to create evolving urban trends to distribute stylish
garments to these communities. This Hip Hop clothing line offers a unique selection of garments to

More recent, Akademiks clothing reached out to a more divrse demographic by merging with Bulldog Bikes during its ten year anniversary.
The brand focus on youth positivity was a direct connection to Bulldog Bike
resulting in a sponsorship. Akademiks has evolved its garments to a more street style
brand using more aggressive denim washes and slimmer fitting jeans.
