Apple Bottoms clothing was launched by Mid-Western, multi-platinum rapper Nelly and two colleagues in 2003.
The brand established itself by appreciating the physique of a woman, liberating her to feel sexy and
secure. The term apple bottom initially began as a way to describe a woman’s derriere then was cleverly used by
Nelly to market quality denim to women.
Apple Bottoms clothing began as a denim line dawning various figures of
apples on the back pockets of it jeans. Appealing to a flirty demographic, flashy colors and detail thread patterns
of apples were used to to draw attention to the back of the jeans. Utilizing pop culture as a medium for promotion,
Nelly featured a competition on VH1 to search for the “Apple Bottom girl.” This television boosted
Apple Bottoms clothing sales so high that within two weeks the jeans were completely sold out. That
same media exposure also expanded the clientele of Apple Bottoms.
After the creation of this television series
Nelly received some criticism stating it was misogynistic. On the other end of the spectrum many people believed
Apple Bottom Jeans liberated women from many of societal norms and what is deemed appropriate clothing.
Nelly believed that “a woman should not have to try to fit in the clothes but that the clothes should fit the woman!”
This statement allows Apple Bottoms to be a lifestyle brand that caters to women of all shapes and size
showering them with boosted self esteem and control.
Nelly and his team worked to create products for
women crafted for numerous silhouettes allowing quality garments to be manufactured. The terms
“apple bottom” has been used in a plethora of hip hop lyrics used to describe women or to promote a
quality jean that actually serves its purpose as a comfortable fitting jean. Heard in the lyrics of
Nelly, Twista, Flo Rida, Apple Bottom Jeans are incorporated into a popular element of hip hop: the
appeal of a sexy woman. Apple Bottoms clothing has now expanded to a line of denim, tops, handbags, footwear,
and fragrances to appeal to a sexy woman on the go.
