Nike Inc., Shoe Company released the first Nike Dunk sneaker in 1985. Againt common thought, Nike Dunks
were not originally meant for skate boarders. In fact, the original release was a Dunk High and intended for basketball
players. Dunks were meant to give an alternative to the Air Jordan sneaker, which was released the same year.
The color themes of the first Nike Dunk Highs were based on the NCAA college teams that had the best
win records and most influential in basketball at the time. Nike wanted to use the growing college basketball fan
market to further their lead in the basketball shoes market.
During the period Nike was focusing on building the Nike Dunk as a worldly known basketball sneaker, they also had a
creative department that dabbled in the idea of making a Skateboarding sneaker. Dancing with the idea of Nike
Skateboarding for over a decade, Nike officially moved forward with the Nike SB project in 2002.
Nike discontinued using Nike Incorporated on their skateboarding products and came up with the
Nike SB logo and professional skateboarding
line.
Nike Dunk Lows, Mids, and Highs are extremely popular today. Rock, Hip-Hop, Pop, and nearly all other music cultures
glamorize the ssneaker making it very trendy. Prices of the shoe have risen to all-time highs due to the popularity,
causing Nike SB retailers to charge $135 for some shoes. The original Nike SB shoes retailed for
$65 according to many sources.
