Neon Signs a No Go In One New Jersey Town

In 'strange news' this week, a New Jersey township's planning board is trying to do
away with Neon signs in the downtown. Organized by the planning committee of Westwood (NJ), the
group is split on what is within 'good tastes' for a business. Leaving the option for
small neon open signs
in business windows, the town leaders think businesses should
find better ways to attract customers beyond that.
"The only problem is pretty obvious. You are taking some control out of business owners hands
individually. Whenever you do this, you are bound to win some and lose some. To lose some however,
there must be a great reason to do so," said business owner & entpreneur Rodrick Rainey about
the story.
The Westwood, New Jersey planning group is not completely settled on the Neon Signs debate.
Currently 9 of 11 members have casted their votes. Five of those Westwood planners voted to
ban the neon signs, four voted again the ban, and two members were absent voting day.
Overall, the majority of town planners said they have no problem with neon signs inside stores.
The group just wants the bright lights 10 feet away from windows and within certain restrictions.
Westwood property owner Bruce Meisel spoke at the meeting.
"They're just not consistent with the character of a pedestrian downtown," he said. The
commercial property owner said none of this tenants can use neon signs currently and no complaints
have been made.
Discussions about the Neon signs plan are expected to continue at the next Planning board meeting.
This will take place June 9.
